A 10 AM Start Time, Coastal Winds Swaying the Speaker Cluster, and Jerry Garcia Opening the Day With the Great American String Band

The May 25, 1974 performance at Campus Stadium on the UC Santa Barbara campus in Goleta, California was an early-morning outdoor show — 10:00 AM start time — with a supporting bill that included Elvin Bishop, Maria Muldaur, and the Great American String Band, the short-lived bluegrass ensemble featuring Jerry Garcia and David Grisman. Garcia was on stage twice that day before the Dead even began their set.

The Wall of Sound system, the massive speaker array that the Dead’s crew had spent years designing and that the band had been touring with since early 1974, was set up at an outdoor coastal stadium in Santa Barbara. Crew members noted that the enormous center cluster speakers swayed visibly back and forth in the Pacific coastal winds during the performance. The Wall of Sound was an engineering achievement of extraordinary ambition — it separated every instrument and vocal onto its own dedicated speaker array, eliminating stage monitor systems entirely and allowing the sound to exist as a single unified field in the venue rather than a mix projected from the front. Hearing it under those conditions, in an outdoor stadium with coastal wind pushing the towers, is a specific kind of concert experience that no recording can fully replicate but that this soundboard transfer gets closer to than almost anything else from the era.

The tape features exceptional sound quality, with distinct instrument separation and vocal clarity that rivals any recording from that era — and Phil Lesh’s quadraphonic bass lines are particularly well captured.

Why This Recording Stands Out

The Tape That Got Left Behind Because It Wasn’t in the Pacific Northwest

🔊 The Wall of Sound

The Most Ambitious Live Sound System Ever Built

The Wall of Sound separated every instrument and vocal onto its own dedicated speaker array, eliminating stage monitors entirely and allowing the band to hear themselves through the same system as the audience. At Campus Stadium, the massive center cluster speakers visibly swayed in the Pacific coastal winds during the performance. The soundboard transfer from this show captures the system’s clarity at close to its best.

📼 Why It Was Shelved

Originally Earmarked for Pacific Northwest ’73–’74, Then Left Out

This performance was originally flagged for inclusion in the Pacific Northwest ’73–’74: The Complete Recordings box set. It was ultimately shelved not because of any issue with the recording quality but because Santa Barbara did not fit the strict geographic theme of the Pacific Northwest. The tape has been sitting in the vault since that decision, waiting for exactly this release.

🎵 Early Scarlet Begonias

A Briskly Up-Tempo Version That Had Just Entered the Rotation

The first set features an early, briskly up-tempo version of Scarlet Begonias that had only transitioned into the live rotation a few months earlier. The song as performed in May 1974 sounds meaningfully different from the extended versions the band would play in later years — faster, more direct, still finding its shape in the live context.

🌊 The Truckin’ Block

A Massive Continuous Block From Truckin’ Through Wharf Rat

The second set is anchored by a massive, uninterrupted block of improvisation weaving from Truckin’ through Jam, Space, Let It Grow, and Wharf Rat before landing in Sugar Magnolia. This continuous sequence is the musical center of the recording and one of the primary reasons this particular show has been requested by tape collectors for years.

🎸 The Supporting Bill

Garcia Played Twice That Day — JGB and Great American String Band

The concert’s 10:00 AM start time was unusual, and the supporting bill was remarkable: Elvin Bishop, Maria Muldaur, and the Great American String Band, a short-lived bluegrass ensemble featuring Jerry Garcia and David Grisman. Garcia performed with the String Band before the Dead even took the stage, making this a rare full-day event with Garcia present from the opening acts through the headliner.

🎚️ The Recording Quality

Phil Lesh’s Quadraphonic Bass Lines Particularly Well Captured

Transferred from the original soundboard reels masterminded by the band’s audio crew, the recording is highly regarded by tape collectors for its precise instrument separation and bottom-end clarity. David Lemieux has described the sound quality as exceptional, with vocal clarity that rivals any recording from the era. Phil Lesh’s quadraphonic bass lines — a feature of the Wall of Sound’s dedicated bass speaker system — come through with unusual definition.
