Television cameras and the Grateful Dead rarely shared the same room by design. This particular night in September 1987 was the exception, and it’s the reason this pick earns its spot on Don’s list. Farm Aid III was happening the very next day at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska, and rather than sending the band out to the plains, the broadcast came directly to them. Part of the second set at Madison Square Garden went out live via satellite feed, with Bob Weir stepping up between songs to plug the cause directly to a national audience.

The first set alone would carry most shows on its own energy. “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” opens things cleanly before “It’s All Over Now” and “High Time” settle into a groove, and “Mexicali Blues” flows straight into “Big River” without a pause. “When Push Comes To Shove” and a genuinely lovely “Box Of Rain” round out the back half, closing with “Don’t Ease Me In” to send the crowd into intermission already fully warmed up.

The second set is where the night turns historic. “Crazy Fingers” opens into an extended “Uncle John’s Band” and “Playing In The Band,” the kind of jam sequence that made Garden shows from this era so consistently sought after by tape traders. After Drums and Space pull the room into deeper, more abstract territory, “I Need A Miracle” snaps things back into focus, and what follows is the moment this show is remembered for. The Dead launch into “Maggie’s Farm,” a first ever performance of the Dylan cover for the band, timed exactly to the satellite feed reaching Nebraska. “Black Peter” follows with the crowd audibly roaring at its most quoted line, before “Around And Around” and “Turn On Your Lovelight” close the set at full volume. “Black Muddy River” closes the night entirely, a quiet, melancholy comedown after two hours of exactly the opposite.

Two details make this particular tape worth revisiting beyond the usual Garden run energy. “Maggie’s Farm” here marks its first ever performance by the band, born directly out of that satellite handoff to Farm Aid III, and the segment was carried on the national broadcast alongside “I Need A Miracle” and “Black Peter,” making this one of the rare Grateful Dead sets that reached living rooms well outside the venue in real time.
