The Grateful Dead’s twentieth anniversary summer tour in 1985 was the band celebrating thirty years of making music with the full awareness of how far they had come and how much further they intended to go. The performances across that summer reflect a band that had found a specific kind of settled confidence, technically assured, creatively open, and deeply comfortable with the catalog they had built. The Summer Magic 1985 box set documents seven of those nights in their entirety, previously unreleased, across twenty compact discs. Archivist David Lemieux, who began collecting bootleg tapes from 1983 and 1984, has described the specific energy of the 1985 tour as something fresh and alive even against the backdrop of everything that preceded it.
The standalone retail edition releases simultaneously from Rhino as a three-CD or four-LP vinyl set focused specifically on the June 30 Merriweather show. The live Sugar Magnolia from that night is already streaming on all platforms as a preview. Pre-orders for the full box set are live on Dead.net at $199.98.

The Ripple Effect
NPR launched a week-long multimedia retrospective timed to the Days Between, running from Jerry Garcia’s birthday on August 1 through the anniversary of his passing on August 9. It answered a question the community has been asking for decades.
Hosted by NPR journalists Felix Contreras and Isabella Gomez Sarmiento, The Ripple Effect was designed with a specific mission that went beyond anniversary programming. The hosts framed the series around a single central question: where does the Deadhead community go next? After thirty years of carrying the torch since Garcia’s passing, what does the next generation of fans and musicians look like, and how are they evolving the tradition rather than simply preserving it?
The project distributed across podcast episodes, custom photography, long-form digital articles, and an emotional finale stitched together from personal voice memos submitted by Deadheads worldwide. Origin stories included cross-country road trips, family bonds forged around the music across multiple generations, and at least one fan who was literally born at a Grateful Dead concert.

Mickey Turns 83. Bill Turns 80.
Both drummers marked major birthdays this month. Both have been celebrated for something considerably larger than rock drumming. And Bill Kreutzmann is now the Grateful Dead’s sole surviving founding member.
Mickey Hart celebrated his 83rd birthday with retrospectives honoring a career that went considerably further than rock drumming. He helped invent modern stadium percussion and expanded the rhythmic vocabulary of rock music past any previously defined boundary. His Djembe Tuning Rope, a large-scale kaleidoscopic art installation built from 3D-scanned drums originally displayed on the Sphere screens during the Dead and Company Las Vegas residency, debuted at Oracle Park in San Francisco this month. His physical paintings are also featured in the ticketed Forever Grateful exhibition at Golden Gate Park’s County Fair Building through October 25, displayed under the banner of his lifelong obsession with what he calls the rhythms of the universe. Hart turns acoustic vibrations into visual art and has been doing so for longer than most of the community has been listening.
Bill Kreutzmann turned 80 years old, marking the occasion at his beach house in Hawaii with a surprise performance alongside Honolulu singer-songwriter Tavana. Spotting a conga drum at the gathering, Kreutzmann sat down and played continuously for two and a half hours. That is not a celebrity making an appearance. That is a musician doing exactly what musicians do when they are happy and in the right room. Following the passing of Bob Weir in January 2026, Kreutzmann released a moving public tribute reflecting on their six-decade friendship, which began when the two of them were teenagers practicing in the back of a music shop. He is now the Grateful Dead’s sole surviving founding member, a fact that carries its own particular weight in a community that has lost so much in recent years and that has found so many ways to keep going anyway.
Both Hart and Kreutzmann are celebrated for turning the nightly Drums and Space segments of Grateful Dead shows into full-blown ethnomusicology excursions, expanding what rhythm could mean in the context of a rock concert to something that had no precedent and has found no equal.
