Jerry Garcia’s 31st Birthday · The First Birthday Show in Dead History

The Dead arrived in Jersey City three days after playing Watkins Glen, one of the largest concert gatherings in American history. They co-headlined with the Band, whose members walked out to jam mid-set. Fireworks lit up the Jersey City sky in Garcia’s honor. The second set ran over an hour without a single break, moving from Dark Star through El Paso through Eyes of the World into a Morning Dew that closed everything like a door shutting on something enormous. This was the first time in Grateful Dead history the band performed on Garcia’s actual birthday. Tune in tonight.

The Band co-headlined. Members of the Band walked out mid-set to join the Dead on stage. Fireworks lit the sky over Jersey City. The show closed with Goin’ Down the Road Feeling Bad into One More Saturday Night. A night that never stopped mattering to the people who were there.

The legendary second set run
1 Dark Star ~25 min
2 El Paso pivot
3 Eyes of the World ~20 min
4 Morning Dew ~13 min

One unbroken hour of music. Jazz exploration into a Marty Robbins cowboy song into the most inspired Garcia guitar in all of 1973. The kind of run that made people drive hundreds of miles just to be in the room.

“Garcia’s music never needed the big stage to keep mattering. It just needed people willing to show up, plug in, and play it right. The community has always had those people.”
