Pigpen, Primal Jams and Back-Porch Harmonies
While many tribute acts lean into the Dead’s stadium years of the ’80s and ’90s, Box Of Rain focuses on the period it calls “the most prolific and finest” in the band’s history: 1968 to 1974. That covers the psychedelic primal Dead, the acoustic folk and country-rock of Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty, and the long, exploratory jams of the Europe ’72 era.
The six-piece aims to recreate that era’s sound, from Pigpen’s blues-shouting stage presence to a driving drummer and wide-open space jams. Its revolving all-star lineup draws on veterans of Dark Star Orchestra, Living Earth, Zen Tricksters and Dead On Live.
Three Theater Nights This November
An evening with Box Of Rain plus special guest, multi-instrumentalist Tom Hampton.
On Thanksgiving Eve, Box Of Rain plays the Dead’s two landmark 1970 albums, Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty, in their entirety. A portion of ticket sales benefits the Grateful Guitars Foundation, which gets instruments into musicians’ hands and supports music education.
Get Tickets →After Thanksgiving, the band heads to Western Pennsylvania for an “Essential GD ’68–’74” night.
Music Plays the Band
Bands like Box Of Rain are the reason the music never stopped. Music Plays the Band is our weekly celebration of them: live recordings from the Grateful Dead tribute and cover bands keeping the songbook alive, from national touring acts to the local heroes playing your neighborhood theater.
The Dead built their legend on improvisation, an eclectic sound and one of the most devoted fan communities in music history. With the band’s core members now gone, that spirit lives on through the musicians who learned these songs by heart and still take them somewhere new. Tune in every Wednesday night.
